Help Me Kick the Bucket.

December 1, 2009

It’s no secret that I haven’t been blogging. You may [or may not] be wondering why; for those of you who don’t know, I’ve been actually putting everything from this blog into a bucket list book. When I’m done with the book, I’ll be back to the stress free days of blogging that I’m sure you all miss.

That being said, I am currently working on the “Bars” section of the book and need some quotes from students and alumni alike. If you like/have ever been to/have heard of any of the following, tell me why you like it. Whats so great about it? Sure, I have my opinion, but I want to know yours.

Happy Hour at Noahs
Trivia at the Hyde Park Brewery
Saki Bombing at Osho/Neko
Monday Karaoke at Darby’s
Mug Night at Rennie’s
Cocktails at Shadows on the Hudson
Mahoney’s on a weekend
New Paltz Nightlife

Either leave it in a comment, send me a facebook message/tweet, or email me at kait.f.smith@gmail.com. Sooner is better. Thanks!

Happy Hour at Noah’s is great. It’s usually a little crowded (which doesn’t bother me, but might bother some), but it’s worth it when you realize you’re getting FREE FOOD and beer for pretty cheap. The wings are alright, but again, the fact that they’re free makes them that much better. And with most beers being around the $2-3 range, it won’t break your bank. Also, the fact that it’s basically a free dinner makes being designated driver (if you are one for the night) slightly more bearable.

    Monday Night Karaoke
What a great way to begin the week! Never did I think I’d do karaoke… until I went to Darby’s Mondays. I used to sing 3-5 songs a night with my housemates. No one cares what you sound like as long as you pic a ridiculous or popular songs. Key faves: Don’t Stop Believin’, Bohemian Rhapsody, Tubthumping. Irish Nachos, good beer, great times!

    Cocktails at Shadows
For a classy night out (or about as classy as you’ll get in Poughkeepsie), hit up Shadows. I recommend the Jamaican Sunset or the Cucumber Martini for something more exotic. Check out the locals, usually some leftovers from the Grandview weddings that are always entertaining. It’s a good place to bum drinks off of older men!

      Sake Bombing at Neko

Fantastic experience. I went last year with my entire house, most of their girlfriends, and some more mutual friends. We had a party of about 20. One sake bomb, which comes with a rather large can of Sapporo and enough sake to do anywhere from three to five bombs, depending on how much you put in the shot, is $13. Considering the quality of the combination and the amount they give you, $13 is very reasonable. If you’re into sushi, Neko’s is really good. Only place better in the Poughkeepsie area is Akari.

Now, the traditional method of sake bombing is a bit strange. They tell you to pour your glass at least 1/2 full of beer, then make a ‘V’ with your chopsticks on top of your beer glass; make sure they’re touching otherwise it won’t work. Next, balance the shot glass of sake on the chopsticks. Once everyone’s ready to go, everybody pounds the table until their shot falls in, then drinks. I prefer to use the tried and true “drop and go” method more associated with jager bombs, but either way still has the desired effect. I highly recommend going with a big party because in this case, the more the merrier.

    New Paltz Night Life
I love heading across the bridge to New Paltz occasion to go out. It is a refreshing and funky scene that is easy to navigate because everything is right on Main Street! P&Gs and Murphy’s are both a lot of fun, but my personal favorites are the two-for-one ambiance of Cabaloosa’s and Oasis. They have awsome DJ’s, live music, and always a really great crowd. I definitely think a Marist College experience isn’t complete without a couple nights moving and shaking with our local hippie populous.

Happy Hour at Noahs – I only went once. I hate crowds and fighting for my food/beer. The wings were okay, the beer was Bud Light. It was just okay for me.
Trivia at the Hyde Park Brewery – My house and I made this a weekly event. Blonde beers, nachos (they also have EX-cellent burgers), yumm! We even won once, and came in second another time. Was one of the highlights of my week.
Saki Bombing at Osho/Neko – DEFINATELY on the bucket list. Kind of expensive, but worth it. They give you a TON of food, and while its more pricey than most college dinners out, you get what you pay for.
Mug Night at Rennie’s – also a weekly event. Who can beat $1 beers. This was the one time I overrode my crowds rule.
Mahoney’s on a weekend – my FAVORITE bar in Poughkeepsie. I have never had a bad experience there. Ever.
New Paltz Nightlife – The one time I went, I was not impressed. New Paltz kids were unfriendly and some of the locals slightly creepy. I was uncomfortable, but my friends had a good time.
