Serenade the Townies
Having had the awesome opportunity to stay at Marist this summer, my housemates and I were forced to scope out the local bars and see what nightlife was like with the absence of all of the college kids. We spent many a Friday and Saturday mingling with townies at Mahoney’s, but without doubt we often had the most fun at Darby O’Gills on Monday nights.
Why Darby’s and why Mondays? The answer is simple, my friend: Karaoke.
Now I know what you’re thinking — Karaoke? Tone deaf men and women singing country songs and “Don’t Stop Believin’” while chugging on a beer? I won’t lie to you; that does happen. But amidst the tone deafness and the whiny Taylor Swift songs, karaoke can be a damn good time.
The best way to approach the situation is to get some beer in you first — a bit of a buzz always helps to build your courage. If you’re nervous about people judging your singing voice, don’t be. The crowd on Monday’s is primarily composed of townies and Culinary students, which means your chances of passing them on a daily basis are slim to none. Even so, if you’re still feeling stage fright, take the time to watch some of the locals perform. Chances are after catching they slurred renditions of some of your favorite songs, you’re more likely to feel 100 times more confident.
The DJ’s name is PJ. PJ the DJ (clever, eh?). If you attend and sing enough, he will remember your name and your favorite songs and move you up in the line as much as he can. (Note: PJ knows my name. Should I be proud?) He may also rag on you a bit after a while, but it just makes the experience more fun. Tonight as we grabbed the microphones to sing our first song (a gloriously sober version of Carrie Underwood’s “Last Name”) PJ shouted, “Kait’s here, everyone!” as I approached. Sad? Maybe. Funny? Definitely.
Now, if only I could sing…

Obviously, despite our lack of vocal splendor, we had a great time. Such a great time that we sang three more songs: “Somebody to Love” by Queen, “Dontcha” by the Pussycat Dolls and “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix A Lot. Before you judge, I’ll have you know that PJ the DJ requested we sing one more before we go. I’m not sure of what to make of that, but when you’re having a good time, I say roll with it.
If you’ve got friends who want to come out but aren’t so into karaoke, lure them in with the night’s specials: $5 pitchers and 35 cent wings. Oh, and the opportunity to laugh as you embarass yourself in front of a large portion of Poughkeepsie residents.
Public service announcement: You must be 21 to enter and croon on Darby’s Monday nights. But Phatz will drive you there for $1!
Awesome blog!
I thought about starting my own blog too but I’m just too lazy so, I guess I‘ll just have to keep checking yours out.
LOL,
